The Bahamas. Plastic Paradise
What a beautiful, picture-perfect place. It wasn't high on my country list, but as my big brother was getting married there, I jumped at the opportunity to do a bit of exploring before the big day. Wow, did I change my mind! The islands are magical.
We flew straight to Abaco to hunt down some endemic (occurring only in a specific place) birds (by 'hunt' I mean I spent hours looking for the particular elusive feathered friend with a pair of binoculars.) Birders can be referred to as "twitchers" depending on how seriously they take it. I am proud to say I'm a twitcher!...
These islands are so beautiful you can't help but feel relaxed with the softest sand under your toes. Even birders need a bit of cooling off time!
There are so many things I love about the world, but I hate plastic. My question is when will brands start taking responsibility?! It drives me crazy! We tried to pick up as many pieces of rubbish as we could on each beach we visited.
We had a beautiful day exploring the neighbouring Cays with Brendal. If you ever find yourself in the Bahamas, you must go out on his boat. I was like a kid in a toy shop! I was so excited, in fact, I was probably this excited when I saw a Rhino while walking on foot with my brother. Seriously, though, swimming with the first turtle I had ever seen, petting a nurse shark on the head and having stingrays swim around my feet was heaven!
We need to start changing our attitude about the environment before it's too late. Do you have some green solutions to share? Email me if you do. I'm going to be writing a post on what I do currently, but we need to do so much more. National Geographic wrote an excellent article. Planet or Plastic? Have a read here.
