India

Hello!

I'm a friendly South African living in London! Join me on my quest to save the planet. Let's start with recycling….and banning all plastic!

The more you know the less you know, the more you want to know...

I wrote this poem while watching the sunset on my last night in India. It's no Dylan Thomas but it's from the heart. Despite the beautiful sunset it made me sad, to see the plastic washing up on the beach.

So this post is about what else can we use instead of plastic. I want to learn as much as possible and try and get away from the "greenwashing". Ultimately I think we need to move completely away from plastic rather than use "greener" alternatives as we don't yet know how green they are! An old but interesting article. Here. One paragraph that resonated with me was: "And because so many compostable plastics are made to look like real plastic, there’s another layer of confusion: When clear compostable cups end up in the recycling bin, they can contaminate the plastic recycling process."

What else is out there that we maybe haven't thought of yet? I love all the suggestion my friends are sending me! Thank you and keep them coming. My mom sent me a link about Shampoo soap bars! Brilliant! It seems so obvious now that people are making them. I'm going to have to check it out and report back.

I found this cool cling film alternative last year and loving it. It's called Buzzcloth, but you do get lots of other options online now like Beeswax wraps. Great for replacing tin foil and plastic wrapping.

A bit of a growing trend is getting milk delivered in glass bottles again. I love this idea, but unfortunately, no-one delivers to my area yet, check out if you can get fresh bottled milk to your door.

Watch out for those birds! They love a sip.

Perhaps the biggest green lesson here is: "What would Granny do?"
Our grandparents managed just fine. Right?

I've started baking my own bread like my Granny and Grampa used to do, and I love it. Next, I think I need to learn how to pickle things! Being in the kitchen calms me. What about you?
I know it's not always possible with our busy lives, but it's nice to learn something new.

I have lots of tips coming but in the mean time i'll leave you with a delicious old school crunchie recipe from my Gan Gan.

Enjoy!
